Kinark Child and Family Services is a leading child and youth service organization serving over 9,000 children, youth and families a year throughout Ontario. Kinark’s three primary streams include: community-based child and youth mental health, autism, and forensic mental health/youth justice services.
Community-Based Child and Youth Mental Health
Kinark’s team of experts provides evidenced-based services for children and youth with complex needs and their families. A full range of assessment and treatment services, including individual, family and group counselling, is provided by interdisciplinary teams of clinicians at all CYMH locations. Services are provided to clients in the environment most appropriate to their needs, including in Kinark offices, in clients’ homes, at schools and other places in the community, as well as in specialized residential treatment settings.
Kinark also operates the Kinark Outdoor Centre (KOC), a residential outdoor education facility in Minden, Ontario. KOC programs include enhanced respite services for children and youth with autism and their families, school programs, outdoor recreation, camp rental and group retreats, as well as a day camp for children and youth.
Forensic Mental Health/Youth Justice
Kinark offers both secure and community-based forensic mental health services. Syl Apps Youth Centre is a secure youth mental health facility in Oakville, Ontario that provides support for up to 80 youth at a time. Syl Apps is Ontario’s only youth centre with three court-ordered secure programs including youth justice, secure treatment and Ontario Review Board programs.
The Intensive Support and Supervision Program (ISSP) is an intensive, treatment-focused, community-based alternative to custody for youth in conflict with the law who have significant mental health issues.
Autism
As one of nine lead agencies for Autism in Ontario, Kinark supports children with autism spectrum disorder and their families across Central East Ontario. Kinark now serves as the single point of access (SPOA) to the new Ontario Autism Program (OAP) for children and youth (aged 0-18 years) living in York and Durham Regions, Simcoe County and the four counties of Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough and Northumberland.
